Through Positive Eyes, Cape Town

The Iziko Museums hosted Through Positive Eyes in the Slave Lodge, built in 1679, one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town, which literally served as a gathering point and infirmary for slaves transported to the Cape mainly by the Dutch East India Company. The Slave Lodge is dedicated to reflecting on the long, rich, and sometimes terrible history of South Africa under the umbrella theme, “From human wrongs to human rights.” The full Through Positive Eyes exhibition, originally launched in Durban, was adapted to the smaller available gallery space by condensing and overlapping. Small tapestries from the Keiskamma Art Collective were added. HIV-positive members of the Cape Town Through Positive Eyes “Artivist” Collective shared their photo-stories live as the finale of the exhibit.
